‘‘একদিন আজিজ রেজা ভাই শাকিবকে নিয়ে আমার
বাসায় আসেন এবং তাকে আমার সিনেমায় নেওয়ার অনুরোধ করেন। আমি আপত্তি করিনি। কিন্তু প্রযোজক নিতে চাচ্ছিলেন না। তখন আমি দায়িত্ব নিয়ে ‘দুজন দুজনার’ সিনেমায় শাকিবকে নিই। এজন্য আমার রেমুনেশনও কম নিতে হয়েছে। আমি যখন সাত লাখ টাকা নিয়েছি তখন শাকিব ১৫ হাজার টাকা নিতো। আমার অনুরোধে ওর পারিশ্রমিক বেড়েছে। আমার প্রত্যেকটা প্রোডাকশনে আমি বলার পরে ওকে নেওয়া হয়েছে। সবগুলোতেই বন্ডে আমার স্বাক্ষর দেওয়া আছে। এই সিনেমাগুলো হিট হওয়ার পরই শাকিব খান আজকের পর্যায়ে এসেছ।

শাকিব খান তারকা হওয়ার পর শাকিব-পপিকে জুটি বেঁধে অভিনয় করতে দেখা যায়নি। এ প্রসঙ্গে পপি বলেন, ‘তখন শাকিবের সঙ্গে অপুর প্রেম, বিয়ের কারণে আর হয়ে ওঠেনি হয়তো। তাছাড়া তখন ও একটা ব্লকে কাজ করেছে। আমরা যে যার ক্যারিয়ার নিয়ে ব্যস্ত থেকেছি। আমি কখনো নায়ক নির্ভর ছিলাম না। আমাদের দেশে অনেক শিল্পী আছেন যারা জুটি হিসেবে কাজ করেছেন। এক সময় কেউ কাজ ছেড়ে দিলে বা জুটি ভেঙে গেলে তাদের তখন সমস্যা হয়েছে। আমি একমাত্র হিরোইন যে কোনো নায়কের সঙ্গে জুটি বেঁধে কাজ করার চেষ্টা করিনি। আমি কখনো অন্য হিরোর উপর নির্ভর করিনি।’

‘সেন্স অব হিউমার’ নামে একটি টিভি অনুষ্ঠানে শাকিব খানকে ‘সেলফিশ’ বলেছিলেন পপি। অনুষ্ঠানটি উপস্থাপনা করেন শাহরিয়ার নাজিম জয়। সঞ্চালক ‘সেলফিশ’ বলার কারণ জানতে চাইলে পপি বলেন—‘আমার কাছে মনে হয়, ওর (শাকিব খান) মধ্যে দেশ প্রেম, আমাদের শিল্পী ও কলাকুশলীদের জন্য ভালোবাসাটা খুব কম। শাকিবের জন্ম এই ইন্ডাস্ট্রিতে এজন্য ইন্ডাস্ট্রির মানুষদেরকে ওর বেশি গুরুত্ব দেওয়া উচিত।’

শাকিব-পপি জুটি বেঁধে বেশ কিছু সিনেমায় অভিনয় করেছেন। এর মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য হলো—‘দস্যু’, ‘ডাকু রানী’, ‘ওরা সাহসী’, ‘ক্ষমতার দাপট’, ‘ভয়ংকর পরিণাম’, ‘জুয়াড়ি’, ‘হিরা চুনি পান্না’, ‘বস্তির রানী সুরিয়া’, ‘বাপ বেটির যুদ্ধ’, ‘গণ দুশমন’, ‘বিশ্ব বাটপার’, ‘জমজ’, ‘দানব সন্তান’ প্রভৃতি।
